Joomla Extensions: Questions & Answers

Facebook Comments Plugin
Q How can I moderate the Facebook Comment flow?

To be able to moderate a particular comment flow you have to be a moderator/administrator of it.

To be able to use the moderation, you will have to generate your own Facebook Appliaction ID and enter this code to the fcomment plugin parameters.

To get an App ID go to http://developers.facebook.com/ select MyApps and Set Up New App.
You also have to "lint" your URL at http://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug/.

Q Can you just tell me how to retrain the fcomment to Facebook only? Now, the plugin allows people to comment via Facebook, Yahoo, Hotmail... and i'd like it to be Facebook compatible only, just like in your demo section.

Once you are a moderator of your comment flow, you will be able to see a Settings link on your page, this is where you can find:
Other login providers

Q Recently I installed facebook comment plugin. It seems to be working fine. But later I discovered that, I could see the comments in my website, only when I'm logged into facebook account through another window. Otherwise I could not see the comments.

You will have to modify your moderator settings. Go to the Settings link on your page, this is where you can find:
Moderation mode:

Q I installed the fcomment plug-in, but I can't seem to get it to work. I put { fcomment } in the text of my article, but it just converts the tag to text and doesn't recognize it as a tag.
A You have to enable the plugin to make it work (it is not automatically enabled after installation). Go to Extensions|Plugin Manager.

I enabled the plugin.

I create a new Article. I put { fcomment } in to the content section of the Article. I push Preview and the only thing that I see is the text { fcomment }. It doesn't display any comments. And if I look at the html of the Article, it has changed it to <p>{ fcomment }</p>.

What am I doing wrong?

A Do not use the Article Preview! The tag will only be translated into the Facebook comment flow on the live site, use site Preview from the top-right corner of the administrator interface.
Q Are there any customization options? Like being able to make the comments box bigger? Right now it is a little small.
A The look of the plugin comes from Facebook, the only thing you can customize is the width.
Q My website has a dark background, so the comments are not readable. Can I change the background of the comments somehow?

My suggestion would be to place the comment plugin into a 1x1 table. The background of the table can be set to whatever color you like. Please see the example below, you can also use this in HTLM editor mode:

<table border="0" bgcolor="white">
<td>{ fcomment }</td>

Just inquiring about the Facebook Comment plug-in, its actually the slickest/easiest Facebook plug-in I've come across for Joomla, thank you very much for that.

The issue I have is, my website is a darker color, so comments are posted in black font, is there a way to switch to the "dark" Color Scheme that Facebook offers on their Developer site?

A When the Facebook team introduced the ColorScheme feature it did not work at first, so I did not include it in the parameters. Now it works and I added it in the new version v1.0.5. Please download this latest version and reinstall it on your site.

I am using your plugin and I would like to know how can I have the comments of my page to show also to my Facebook wall.

Also I have this problem, I am not receiving any email when they comment, even if I had checked the include me.

If you check the "Post to Facebook" option, it should show on your wall.

But you will still not receive any notification if others are commenting on your site (unless it is a reply to a previous post of yours). This is how the official Facebook plugin works, my plugin only gives an easy Joomla interface to their plugin.

I love youre Facebook comment. If I understand well?

1. You enter a moderator email in the configuration — An email (with link to the post?) will be send to that email anytime somebody post a new comment?

2. What happens when people “Subscribe” Do they receive an email notification (to their own email?) that somebody comment on a discussion (comment)?

Do you think it will be possible to have a different moderators e-mail pass in the plugin. I have multiple bloggers on one site and I like to install your extension but I absolutely need to each bloggers to receive their own moderation email. Do you think it’s possible? I was thinking at something that you pass directly in the content plugin code like: { fcomment,email@ofthemoderator } I don’t mind if only one facebook account receives the article discussion (but being able to control that to will be great).

Can this be attached to a Facebook Page (not a personal Facebook Page)?

It works just as you described.

I made a new version as you requested. Example of the inline parameter has to be added like below:

{ fcomment mail_to= This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it }You can download the new version from my page, you will have to reinstall the plugin.

I don't really understand your last question though. The comments are linked to the article URL not to a Facebook Page. Though it is true if Post to Facebook is checked the post will show on the poster's Facebook wall, the poster can be any valid Facebook entity.

Q I am Getting this error: "Warning:... is unreachable" Can you help me with this?

Try to "lint" your page by Facebook, it may give you some more useful error message. Enter the same URL as the plugin appears on. Below is the link for this page:

If you are not successful let me know your page's URL so I can take a look at it.

Q Will I have to add an fcomment tag on each article? Or can I just install it on a module position below the article and it will be fine?

You have to add it to each article that you want it to be included in.

It is not a module so the only way to add it to a module position is to use some module that can show content and is handling content plugins as well.

Q Hi! Thanks for the great extension! Though I have one question left to solve. I have been using some other extension for some time and I have accumulated certain number of comments which I need to keep when I move to your extension.

Is this possible to have previous facebook comments displayed or do I have to start from blank? I have a facebook app.
A Hi! It depends on what URL your previous extension used for your article, if it is the same this plugin uses then your comments would keep, if not then they would restart.
Q I have 2 comments on my page, I can see them when I go to moderation tool, now yours 'testing...' comment is there also, but I can't see this two first comments on this URL.
A Are you sure you made your comments on the same URL? I mean if you have a different URL like not Search Engine Friendly URL then Facebook considers it a different URL even if it points to the same article. Anyway everything works fine as far as I can see.

Hi there Thanks so much for your fcomments plugin - it's really useful! Having said this, I am having a bit of trouble with the plugin, which is probably something I've done in the setup.

If you post a facebook comment on any of the blog articles from the homepage, it duplicates that comment on all blog articles. How do I stop it from doing that? If you click on the blog article, you will then be able to see facebook comments specific to that article which is what I want. Ideally, I don't want the facebook comments to be visible on the homepage. Hoping you can help!

The problem is that there can be one fcomment on one page if you do not specify an URL directly with the inline URL parameter. The reason is that FB keeps track of the comments by their reported URL, and if it is the same page you will have the same FB flow several times.

I can think of two ways to resolve this, either use the inline URL parameter pointing to each separate articles, see the details on my page. Or by using the READ MORE feature in blog view and then visitors can only comment if they open individual articles.

First thank you for a great and simple plugin you have made. I have installed your Facebook comment plugin and it is working fine but I also give me a warning massage that my url is is unreachable. I have read info at your site but still cant find out what is wrong?

Can you help please?

This is the error message Facebook returns:

Object at URL '...' of type 'article' is invalid because the domain 'www.xxx.com' is not allowed for the specified application id '1111111111'. You can verify your configured 'App Domain' at https://developers.facebook.com/apps/1111111111.

So apparently there is some problem woth your Facebook application ID, either you remove your app. ID (since it is only needed if you plan to moderate the comments) or clear the problem.

Q I wonder what I shall download to have comments on articles.
A Both fcomment and fbar can be used to have comments in your articles. The main difference is that fcomment only appears in articles which you specifically include it in. While fbar has a number of rules as to where it is displayed. The other main difference is that fbar incorporates other Facebook components as well, which you can switch on and off individually.
Q Hi I used your Facebook Comments Plugin, works fine.. But I cannot see the comments on the facebook page of the commenter.. The post to facebook is clicked, but nothing comes to facebook, why does this happen? How can I correct it? I am considering a donation if the plugin works fine. Please reply!
A If the Post to Facebook checkbox is checked before making a post on fcomment then the poster will have the post also appear on his facebook message wall. This feature is not part of fcomment this is directly controlled by Facebook, so I do not see why it should not work for you.
Q Hi, I just installed your Facebook comments plugin, it works great! But I wanna use it on modules also (like on the polls results module) and the fcomment tag does not turn into the comment box as it works for articles. So the question is: how can I make it work on modules? I am adding the fcomment tag directly on the php template of the module (as html text). Thanks in advance!
A It could be done but only by modifying the modules underlying php source. But in that case it would be better to include the original Facebook code snippet not { fcomment }.
Q I am looking for a module or component to work for a church site I am doing and I am needing it to function as a prayer request. Where users can post prayer needs and be displayed much like FB comments. Here is a url to what is out there that I am trying to achieve. I believe your tool can work, I am needing to know it I can tweak the buttons and not have it linked to FB, is that possible?
A The fcomment plugin is only a wrapper for FB comments, you have very little possibilty to tweak anything.
Q Can I use your plugins for FB in virtuemart flypages?
A Last time I checked VirtueMart flypage does not use the prepare content hook which enables articles to use plugins. So it will not work "out of the box". But obviously VirtueMart's PHP source could be modified to enable this hook.
Q I am getting emails about new comments on pages on saakeskus.fi every once in a while, but when I follow the link in the email, there are no comments there then. How does this come? Any idea?

1. If somebody posts in reply to an earlier post, then it is not easy to spot but will still generate an email.

2. If somebody makes a post then decides to delete it, then again you won't be able to find it but still get the email.

Note: The default order of posts is based on the social closeness determined by Facebook, so in order to spot new posts, the recommended order is Reverse Chronological.

Facebook Like Button Plugin
Q I've installed the Facebook Like plugin in my Joomla 1.5.22 website, and then inserted { flike } into some content, and into the template html, but both in both cases nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong?
A Probably you did not enable the plugin, it is not automatically enabled after installation. Go to Extensions|Plugin Manager in the back-end and enable it.

Hi! I´m using FLike on our Swedish website and I want the button to display the text in Swedish. It works as long as I´m logged in on Joomla but as soon as I log out and browse the website like a "normal" visitor the button shows in English instead.

I have specified Swedish as language both in the head-tags and in each article in Joomla. Hope you can help me with this. It´s a great plugin and I´m very happy I found your website!

I don't really understand why the language is not detected correctly. However I made a new version v1.0.3 of the plugin where you can specify the language yourself.

Please uninstall the old version, download the new one and install it. Then instead of simple { flike } you can use { flike lang=sv_SE } in your Swedish content.

Q I use the flexi custom code to insert fb like box code into a module... The plugin does work and convert the { flike }, but it collides somehow with my fb like-box code in that module, making only one of them work at a time.
A I also had similar problem on one of my sites (although it was a Drupal site). Try to change the order of the modules. For me it helped, but I am not sure it will help you too. The problem is a Facebook issue, the order of these elements should not affect the modules.
Q hmmm, another problem....
og:type and og:image tags are put into my code a lot of times...

The flike plugin puts og:type into the header as Facebook recommends. However if you use fcomment on the same page or another FB module which puts its own og:type, there will be multiple og:types. Unfortunately there is no way to check if this info is already included or not for the plugin. While this is not a nice feature it does not cause a problem.

The og:image is only put into the header if you specify your image, if you leave it blank it will not be included.

I am just working on a new plugin which combines all of my plugins into one (of course in a configurable way), so this problem will cease to exist.

Q How can I upgrade to a newer version?
A Once you downloaded the version. You will have to uninstall the old version and install the new one.
Q Sometimes the upcoming comment box, which pops up when a user click like, is partly hidden behind another element on the page. I do not really need the comment box, can it be switched off?

Put the following CSS section into your template CSS file:

.fb_edge_widget_with_comment span.fb_edge_comment_widget {display: none !important;}

Alternative solution suggested by Facebook:
If the Like button is placed near the edge of an HTML element with the overflow property set to hidden, the flyout may be clipped or completely hidden when the button is clicked. This can be remedied by setting setting the overflow property to a value other than hidden, such as visible, scroll, or auto.

Q How can I change the picture what is sent to facebook when I press the 'like' button?

In the plugin properties there is a parameter called FB Property (og:image) for just this purpose.

Make sure you provide full URL for the required image.

I added the FB like button to a site and built a page with a flike=id137 code.

The first time I tested the link, I did not have my own icon in place so the BUILD icon showed up. I added my icon, added it to another page, and my icon shows up, but the BUILD icon continues to show up on the first page.

It seems to be buried into the cache of the file. Tried global check in, clearing the cache, deleting cache in Joomla - it still shows up. Is there any way to correct this? thanks!

You can check if your page generates the correct code, if you view the source of your page (CTRL+U in Firefox e.g.) then you should see a line like this:
<meta property="og:image" content="http://www.buildweb.eu/buildweb_logo.gif"/>
Here you should see your picture URL, make sure it is a fully qualified path, this what FB requires.

Facebook also caches your pictures, so you may have to wait a while before you see the required picture even if everything is set-up fine.

Q I have just installed / configured the Facebook Like button plugin. It is exactly what I have been searching for, a like button that can be positioned within an article. I am running Joomla 2.5, and my blog content is all K2 Items. The plugin works great, with the exception of using the article ID. Perhaps it is due to K2 (Items) as opposed to Joomla (Articles)... so I thought I would ask, to see if you have success in K2. When I enter the { flike id=35 }, I can not "save" the item, as the web site will not close the page. Also the front end of the site (that specific page) will result in a 500 error. I have tried different syntax, but no success. I did not see any K2 references in the Q&A section - so thought it best to ask. Thank you in advance for your assistance. By the way - Great Job on the plugin, works very well in all other respects.
A Sorry, I do not use K2, so at the moment it is not supported by my plugins.
Q Your facebook like button is a great joomla extension however, I have come across a problem. In joomla 1.5 when the article containing the { flike } tag is displayed in a module position the { flike } tag is showing and not the facebook like button. Any idea of how I can correct this? Many thanks.

That is because the module does not use the content hook needed for the plugin to work. Probably the only solution would be to modify the PHP source of the module so that it does call this hook.

From Joomla 1.6 this is handled by a new Custom HMTL Parameter called "Prepare Content".

Hi! I've been using your facebook like extension on a site for a year and it works like a charm :-) We are converting the site to multilingual and the address of the English home page will change from

www.xxx.ca to www.xxx.ca/en. From my tests it looks like the the facebook stats for the original page will be lost after the conversion because the URL will change. Is there anything I can do to move the stats from the old URL to the new URL. Any suggestions you have would be much appreciated.

I made a new release for you v1.0.14. You can download it from my site.
It has two new plugin parameters for your purposes:

URL Replace From: www.xxx.ca/en
URL Replace To: www.xxx.ca

It will effectively change your URL links for Facebook back to your original links, thus keeping the likes.

Q How can we integrate the facebook like plugin with K2 items in joomla?
A K2 does not use the prepare content hook of Joomla, which is where plugins like flike can attach themselves. Of course this could be added but only by modifying the PHP source of K2.

Facebook Share Button Plugin
Q Okay, I tried flike without fshare and it works, but when I include flike and fshare together in the same articles, only fshare works...
A This is something I also noticed. It seems to me a Facebook bug. If you include both flike and fshare, it will only work if flike is before fshare.

Google +1 Button Plugin
Q Can you please tell me why isn't possible to put your plg_plusone in a costum html module. Thanks for your help.

The plg_plusone plugin is a content plugin. It means that it only functions in articles. It is not a module.

The Custom HTML module does not use the normal content hooks so the { plusone } tag will not be translated into a Google +1 button.

Download Counter

I love the CDownload plugin but I am getting the following errors. Can you help?

Warning: mysql_fetch_row(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/../public_html/libraries/joomla/database/database/mysql.php on line 359

Warning: mysql_free_result(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/../public_html/libraries/joomla/database/database/mysql.php on line 362

Did you install the CDownload component as well?

The CDownload plugin will only work if the CDownload component is installed, this is where the database part is installed, which is needed to keep track of the download counts.

Facebook Article Bar
Q Is there any way to automatically add the facebook-bar to all articles? Thanks!
A Facebook Article Bar does exactly that.
Q Hi, can you help me? How to use "facebook bar" in other cases I put { flike } into article. What is the case of "fbar"? Thanks.
A fbar is a plugin where according to some few simple rules (see under the plugin parameters) a number Facebook components are automatically added to the articles. So you do not have to add anything to your article, just enable it and set rules.

I installed Facebook Article Bar. It looks great but I have a few questions.

1. I have a custom html footer. If I attach the article bar to an article on that page, the article bar also attaches to my footer. I have tried excluding it with no luck. How do I fix it?

2. What should I put in the following boxes? Facebook Application ID FB Property (og:type) FB Property (og:image) FB Property (og:locale) The type box does have 'article' in it. I followed a link to the Facebook ID which takes me to a very large website and I don't know what I'm supposed to do there. I had some Facebook code in my head but removed it as it seemed to generate Facebook errors. I would really like to get this up & running. Too bad there isn't documentation for the Article Bar on your website. I appreciate your help! :-)

1. In the plugin parameters of the Custom HTML module set "Prepare Content" to "No".

2. Those FB properties are optional if you do not know what they are you do not need them. The Application ID is only needed if you want to moderate the comment flows.

Q Hello from Argentina, maybe I am doing something wrong, but I have the latest plug_fbar version installed in my joomla 2.5 website and the facebook bar is not only appearing in articles but in custom html modules too. using the JA elastica template and the t3v2 framework. I did not try with the plug_fcomments plug-in instead of the fbar yet.

There is an option for the Custom HTML module just for this purpose, in its Basic Options, set Prepare Content to No.

Thank you for writing the Facebook Article Bar plugin extension for Joomla! The Article Bar works on all pages but the home page. Can you please tell me what I'm doing wrong. Thanks!!

A Your homepage is in blog view (that is the default). fbar does not work in blog view, because the plugin cannot get the individual article URLS.
Q Hi there, I installed the Facebook Bar extension and at first very pleased, until I noticed that excluding two category-ID´s doesn´t work. Means I have some misplaced Like-bars in my sidebar news flashes... Any idea?
A It should work, you have to use commas (',') as separator to list several category IDs.
Q Hi, I've recently installed your facebook article bar extension, it's great! I was just wondering if there is a way to set it to use a different image for each article, i.e. the first one in the article? Also, I'd love to put a bar on my main homepage to allow people to share the overall page, is this possible? I can't seem to figure it out in the setting. Thanks for your help.
A Yes, it is possible. If you set the Full Article Image or Intro Image for your artciles, they will be used in this order. These are under Images and links and is not available for Joomla 1.5.x.
Q Great Plugin! Congrats. Just a problem: It give me a duplicate of the bar. I put an article on my site footer, now I have a second bar in that article for every page that already has an article with the bar... no matter if I try to use exception or including with the IDs...
A If that article is a CustomHTML, you have to set its module parameter "Prepare Content" to "No".
Q I'm using your Facebook Article Bar on my organization's website and I've run into something I cannot figure out. On some articles, when you hit Share or Like, you are offered the choice of the og:image or an image from the article, but with other articles, you are only able to us the FB Protertyor:image. I would prefer users have the option to choose the image they'd like associated with the link, if possible. Is there a way to make that happen consistently? Also, when a user Likes or Shares an article, the article title and url populate, but not a sample set of text from the first paragraph. I'm not sure what to do to make that happen. Any advice you can give me on either of these matters would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on what Joomla version you are using. For Joomla 1.5.x it is not possible to set a user image becuase the article has no associated image. Under new Joomla versions however you have the Intro Image and the Full Article Image under each article's Images and links properties. These images are used by fbar (it is a fairly new feature, so you may have to update fbar).

The same story goes for intro text, under new Joomla versions you have the Meta Description which is used by fbar as og:description.

Q Does fbar work with K2 component?
A As far as I know (I do not use it) K2 does not use the prepare content hook which enables articles to use plugins. So it will not work "out of the box". But obviously K2's underlying PHP source could be modified to enable this hook and thus enable fbar.
